SVN Suriname becomes first CARICOM organization to achieve UN-accredited certification for reforestation project
Surinamese reforestation project receives international recognition for CO₂ compensation
Brokopondo, July 21, 2025 — SVN has become the first organization in the CARICOM region to achieve Global Carbon Standard (GCS) certification for the Suriname Reforestation Project. The GCS standard is internationally recognized as the benchmark for reliable CO₂ compensation and is accredited by the UNFCCC (UN Climate Convention).
Pilot project demonstrates tangible results
The certified project in Brokopondo covers 2 hectares where more than 13,000 trees and crops have been planted. Unlike traditional carbon credits based on future expectations, SVN's Carbon Debits are based on already realized CO₂ storage. The certification requires complete transparency through satellite monitoring and blockchain technology.
The agroforestry model combines reforestation with economic development through planting mahogany, cacao, and ginger. The project has created three permanent jobs in collaboration with local communities and contributes to 10 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, with direct impact on climate action, biodiversity, food security, and sustainable production.
International recognition
"We are genuinely impressed by SVN's commitment and attention to detail in delivering a project that is both environmentally responsible and technically rigorous. At GCS, we're honored to support their efforts and proud to be part of their journey toward a more just and sustainable world," said Michael Beers, CSO & Environmental Engineering Lead at Global Carbon Standard.
"This recognition confirms that our model works and has scalability. It's an important step for Suriname's position as a sustainability leader in the Caribbean region and a foundation for further expansion of our projects," says Edmundo Duiker, co-founder of SVN Suriname.
Expansion plans
SVN uses the pilot results as a foundation for expansion to other areas in Suriname and the CARICOM region. Details about future projects will be announced in the coming months.
